A stellar year just got even better for WA’s Maddison Hinson-Tolchard, who has earned a spot in the field for the US Women’s Open at Pebble Beach.
Gosnells golfer Hinson-Tolchard, 21, topped regional qualifying at Indian Creek Golf Club in Dallas, Texas, with an eight-under-par 36-hole total. She will now take her place in the field for the showpiece event in women’s golf from July 6-9.
“Words can’t describe how excited I am for this,” Hinson-Tolchard told GolfWA. “It’s another achievement that I have ticked off my list and I’m so pumped to be able to go and play against the best in the world. It’s going to be one of the best experiences at one of the most iconic golf courses.”
A member of the Oklahoma State University Cowgirls golf team, Hinson-Tolchard has excelled on the US collegiate circuit since her move stateside in 2021, winning three events and finishing fourth in the season-ending NCAA Women’s Championship last weekend.
Her college career saw her tackle Pebble Beach’s iconic layout in late 2022 and Hinson-Tolchard admits she can’t wait to get back and give it another go on the biggest stage of all.
“I’m interested to see how it’s going to play compared to how we played it in our college event,” she added. “I love the place, though. It’s one of the most beautiful places I have ever played and the stretch of holes along the ocean are my favourite.”
In qualifying, Hinson-Tolchard will join fellow WA golfers Hannah Green and defending champion Minjee Lee in the field at Pebble Beach. Other star names set to contest the championship include world number one Nelly Korda, 10-time Major winner Annika Sorenstam, Michelle Wie-West, Lydia Ko and Australia’s LPGA Tour rookie Grace Kim.
The US Women’s Open is the richest event in women’s golf with a US$2m first prize and total prize purse of more than US$10m.
