The Junior Pennant Season wrapped up this Sunday with more than two hundred juniors embracing their final rounds across three spectacular WA Courses. Juniors, parents, volunteers, managers and marshals are to be congratulated on their participation, sportsmanship and respectful consideration given to the generous host clubs this season. The quality of golf and teamwork presented in the Juniors was a joy to be a part of.
Division One Boys’ were well matched with the top two teams Joondalup and Mount Lawley pitted against each other in the final round at The West Australian Golf Club in Yokine. JCC’s top seed McKinney was strong from the outset against MLGC’s Jung, putting beautifully and confidently winning the match 4&3.
A standout of the day with JCC’s Aldrich Potgieter holing out two eagles in the first five holes leaving MLGC’s Flatman shaking his head in disbelief. Both boys played a great round, but with Potgieter performing at such a consistently high level, the match was the first to finish with another JCC win 7&8.
Not to be outdone, MLGC’s Joe Buttress was 115 out on the fourth, and with a confident swing with his nine iron holed out for eagle to a cheering crowd. Being such a little chap, Joe approached blissfully unaware of his success, jumping to try and get a view of where his ball had landed. Initial panic when he couldn’t see his ball on the green was soon replaced with a big smile and a high five from Grandpa on the bag. Joe secured the match for MLGC 3&2.
MLGC’s Terry Hatzis provided some resistance, snapping Ian Pienaar’s long standing undefeated streak in Junior Pennants but JCC’s Gareth Steyn’s win and Lachlan Hall’s fightback for a square secured the fourth consecutive Junior Pennant flag for the boys from Joondalup. Team captain McKinney shared, “we had a lot of confidence coming into the season knowing we had a strong team with a lot of depth, but we still had to do it. The boys started with some awesome 6-0 wins – we knew Mount Lawley was not going to be an easy game to finish on. We are really proud to represent Joondalup and just stoked to be the first team to win four flags.”
The 2020 Flag for Division One Girls’ was confidently secured by the ladies from Royal Perth who have performed strongly all season, with no losses in the five rounds. The final round was played at Gosnells Golf Club well supported by club members and families early Sunday morning. Top RPGC seeds Yeah Jin-Lee and Amie Phobupha individually won four of their five matchups over the season.
“Thank you to Colette and Wendy for an amazing pennant season filled with chocolate and support. As a team, we are very grateful to Golf WA and their team for all the organisation and giving us the opportunity to play so many great courses and meet new friends. A big congratulations to all the other Division winners.”
Congratulations to all Juniors who participated in the 2020 Season.
