Addy upstages pros to win Joondalup Resort Classic

22nd May 2023

WA amateur Tom Addy made full use of home-course advantage as he recorded a thrilling victory at the Metal West Recycling Joondalup Resort Classic.

Nineteen-year-old Addy was in scintillating form around his home track throughout the $40,000 36-hole PGA Pro-Am Series event. His first-round five-under-par 67 around the resort’s Lake/Quarry course left Addy in a tie for 2nd, just one behind overnight leader Alex Edge – and better was yet to come on day two.

Paired together on the final day to complete two loops of Joondalup’s nine-hole Quarry course, Addy, Edge and playing partner David Bransdon engaged in a cut-and-thrust encounter that saw the lead change hands on multiple occasions.

Addy drew level on the second hole before Victorian Bransdon fired back-to-back birdies to edge in front. Four consecutive birdies from the 4th hole propelled Edge into a three-stroke lead heading into the back nine, but further drama lay in store with Addy in a determined mood.

He birdied 10 and 11 to Edge’s par-bogey to draw level, then took the outright lead with his fifth birdie of the day at the 14th. With both Bransdon and Edge dropping late shots, Addy was able to par his way home to complete a memorable two-stroke victory.

“Standing on the final tee was about as nervous as I’ve ever been on a golf course,” Addy told GolfWA. “But it was great to make par and have all the boys run onto the green with the Champagne!”

Addy paid tribute to the spectators, whose support he said made a real difference on the day. “When I birdied 10 and 11 to get level with Alex, the crowd really got behind me,” he said. “The turnout was really good and they helped me a lot. It was pretty wild at times, but a lot of fun.”

The win extended Addy’s rich vein of 2023 form that saw him finish as runner-up in the WA Amateur Championship and make his senior WA debut in the Australian Interstate Teams Matches earlier this month.

Having reached the WA Amateur final, Addy earned an exemption into October’s WA Open. will also take place at Joondalup Resort making the amateur star a realistic contender for the PGA Tour of Australasia event.

Elsewhere in the field, WA’s Hayden Hopewell finished T4th, with fellow WA pros Ben Ferguson, Ethan Andrews, Scott Barr, Haydn Barron and Ryan Peake all in the top 15.

Several of the state’s leading amateurs also teed up at Joondalup Resort, with Joseph Buttress (WAGC) and home-club favourite Celine Chen the best of the bunch, finishing 16th and T17th respectively at level par and +1 for the tournament.
