Three of WA’s rising golf stars were amongst 15 players to participate in an intense two-day training camp at the Australian Golf Centre in Melbourne.
Rookie professional Connor McKinney was joined by leading state amateurs Connor Fewkes (Goldfields Golf Club, pictured above with McKinney) and Josh Greer (Joondalup Resort) at the ‘Transition Camp’ at Golf Australia’s HQ, which is aimed at helping young athletes better manage the switch from the amateur game to the pro ranks.
The camp included a Q&A session with WA’s own tour star Min Woo Lee and skills sessions with high-performance coaches, including Royal Fremantle’s Ritchie Smith.
Some of the other topics covered during the two-day camp included: –
- Pros and cons of sporting supplements
- Coping with jet lag and extended travel
- Media training and what to expect from interviews
- Nutrition and sports science
“We see this camp as hugely important,” said Tony Meyer, Golf Australia’s High Performance Director. “If you look at golfers, a lot of them don’t progress in that transitional period. The competition’s harder, they’re lonely, they travel more. All those things can have an impact.
“We know from our experience that the last two years of an amateur career and the first three years of your professional career are the most critical. This camp will help them prepare for the challenges of competing internationally against tougher competition.”
The 15 athletes involved (pictured below) were: Justice Bosio, Louis Dobbelaar, Quinn Croker (QLD); Harrison Crowe, Jeffrey Guan, Belinda Ji, Jye Pickin (NSW); Keeley Marx, Jasper Stubbs (Victoria); Caitlin Peirce, Jack Thompson, Jack Buchanan (South Australia); Connor Fewkes, Connor McKinney, Josh Greer (WA).
