Golfers on Rottnest Island raised almost $40,000 for Cancer Council WA’s ‘The Longest Day’ golf challenge, with more than 50 players supporting the event.
The Longest Day challenges golfers to play up to 72 holes between dawn and dusk, with funds raised going to Cancer Council WA to assist with research, prevention and support for West Australians affected by cancer.
Rottnest Island Golf Club hosted the state’s only offshore Longest Day event, with two days of play in late March. On the first day, 14 participants completed a full 72 holes of golf, with two further players completing 54 holes. Thirty-six more golfers teed up in the following day’s 27-hole event with the total funds raised over the two days surpassing $39,000.
Rottnest Island Golf Club’s John Birkett was instrumental in setting up the event and was delighted at its success. “The true winner of the day was the extraordinary fundraising efforts from all participants,” he said. “To raise over $39,000 for Cancer Council WA is truly amazing.”
The Longest Day has been running nationally for nine years and has raised millions of dollars in that time. It was inaugurated in WA in 2021 and if your club would be interested in hosting a future event, full details are available on the Longest Day website.
