Local favourite Alyssa Keir and Mandurah’s Ben Sheehan have taken out the respective Girls’ and Boys’ Drummond Golf Tournament of Champions titles for 2013. In the final state ranking event of 2013, Keir and Sheehan successfully navigated the tough Ellenbrook course at The Vines Golf and Country Club to prevail against a strong field of 75 players.
In near perfect conditions for golf, Vines member Keir used her local knowledge to great effect playing blemish free golf on her first 15 holes to have a stranglehold on the title. Back to back bogeys on 16 and 17 left the door ajar for Mount Lawley’s Claudia Pisano. However, Keir held her nerve to birdie 18 for a 1 over par 73 and seal a one stroke victory over Pisano. Lake Karriyup’s Richita Vasandani was third, two shots further back.
In the boy’s Championship, Sheehan, who narrowly missed out of the State Junior Championship the previous week, put the strong field on notice early playing the opening 9 holes 1 under par. After slipping up with bogey 4 on the tough 13th hole, Sheehan quickly got his round back on track with birdie on 16. With victory in sight, Sheehan stumbled with bogey on his penultimate hole. However, he answered back in the best possible fashion with an emphatic birdie on 18, securing victory and 1 under par round of 71 to finish two strokes ahead of the fast finishing Liam O’Loughlin (Mandurah) and Kristian Mitchell (Lakelands).
In the nett section, Dallas Holdsworth made a mockery of his 12 handicap posting 75 of the stick and a Nett 63. The feature of his round was an unbelievable stretch of 8 holes which he played 5 under par.
