340 gents from regional Western Australia converged on some of Perth’s best courses to participate in Drummond Golf Men’s Country Week, one of the busiest weeks on the metropolitan golfing calendar. This popular event consists of Par, 4BBB, Stableford, and Strokeplay competitions providing participants with the opportunity to compete on up to four different metro courses.
The first of many events kicked off on Monday with Stableford rounds at Hartfield GC, Lakelands CC, and Royal Perth GC. Capel’s Barry Burstow led the pack at Hartfield on 39 points, with the competition tighter at Lakelands where Waroona’s Philip Savarese narrowly defeated Denmark’s Anthony Griffiths on a countback on 43 points. Tim Buller from Darkan was atop the leader board on 42 points at Royal Perth.
Wanneroo Golf Club hosted a large field in the 36-hole stroke competition on Tuesday. The premiere round of the week, the top seven players reached into Friday’s match play competition of City vs Country at Nedlands Golf Club.
The Gross winner of the 36-hole event by a convincing six strokes was Tim Gilloti from Bunbury Golf Club with two outstanding rounds of 70 and 72. “It’s great to play here today, the course was magnificent. Nedlands always challenges me so I’m looking forward to the Friday match play,” Gilloti said.
With rounds taking place through the week across the city, Country week will come to a close on Friday with the traditional City v Country Match that has been held on the final day of Country Week since 1975. The line-up for Friday at Nedlands Golf Club will present some interesting matchups.
The best performing players from the Country Strokeplay 36-hole Championship (in order of gross scores) challenge some of Perth’s finest amateurs in a battle for a trophy but most importantly bragging rights.
Our thanks to Wayne Tardrew of Osborne Park Drummond Golf for his generous sponsorship of this hugely popular event. It is a highlight in the annual golfing calendar and a wonderful celebration to close the Men’s Country Golf 2020 Season.
