Competitors from Joondalup Country Club have dominated the podium at the 2020 Drummond Golf Junior Amateur Championships held on Sunday at the picturesque Hartfield Golf Club. Favourites Amie Phobubpa and Aldrich Potgieter took home the Junior titles.
Sixteen-year-old Aldrich, fresh from an outstanding performance at the recent 2020 Nexus Risk WA Open, shot a confident two under in his first round positioning him in lead position for the afternoon. Aldrich was closely followed by fellow club member Tom Addy, and Royal Fremantle’s Joe Teasdale.
Potgieter remained steady, making the turn at square, and continuing with consecutive pars until clinching a birdie on seventeen. “I hit a two iron over the left side, then wedge in to hit the pin for a foot putt. Very happy that I hit the greens solidly and putted well today,” shared Aldrich.
Joondalup’s Joe Buttress and Mount Lawley’s Ollie Marsh chased hard with competitive rounds of 72 and 71, but Potgieter’s lead was too strong taking the title by an impressive eight stroke margin.
New Joondalup recruit Amie Phobubpa, fresh from recent wins at the Royal Perth and Gosnell Junior Amateur Championships respectively, shot a confident one over in her first eighteen, closely followed by Mount Lawley’s Amanda Gan and Lake Karrinyup’s Sheridan Clancy. Entering the final round Amie stumbled with four bogies in her first seven holes, but gained strength making birdie on 18 and 6.
“I tried not to let those bogies get to me and focused on the game ahead. I just tried to hit one shot at a time and remain steady. I am really excited to have won a Drummond Junior Title, such a great way to finish off the year!” shared Phobubpa.
Mount Lawley’s Amanda Gan and Ollie Marsh took home the Sub-Junior Amateur Titles (age 14 and under) with impressive rounds on the challenging greens and fairways of Hartfield Golf Club. Jorga Hinson-Tolchard from Gosnells Golf Club was awarded the Kay Lane Trophy as the Girl’s Overall Nett Winner.
Special congratulations to young Gosnells talent, twelve-year-old Nariko McDonnell who shot a personal best of Nett 69. Nariko has been a consistent performer rising through the Golf WA Smarter Than Smoking Junior tour.
Managing Director of Drummond Golf Osborne Park, Wayne Tardrew joined our presentations. He shared his support of the event, “congratulations to all the participants today. We are proud to be sponsors of this event and look forward to continuing our relationship with GolfWA in developing junior golf.”
