International players lead the way in both the men’s and women’s Australian Amateur, but several WA players remain in the hunt for glory at the championship’s halfway stage.
In the men’s event, New Zealand’s Kazuma Kobori shares a one-shot lead with Singapore’s Ryan Ang at 10 under par, while Japan’s Mamika Shinchi and Yuna Araki are joint top of the women’s standings at 8 under, ahead of compatriots Saki Baba and Mikuki Hashimoto.
WA’s Gareth Steyn is the joint-leading Australian in the field after a blistering six-under 66 at St Michael’s Golf Club saw him finish the day in T8th at 7 under for the championship, alongside SA’s Jack Buchanon.
Steyn will be joined in the final 36 holes by fellow WA players Alex Maxwell, Joseph Buttress (both T17th at 3 under), Joseph Owen (T42nd, Par), Josh Greer (T48th, +1), Connor Fewkes and Tom Addy (both T57th, +2). Lake Karrinyup CC’s Owen’s progress had been in doubt after an opening round of 78 at New South Wales Golf Club, but he scorched to a 66 at St Michael’s to make the cut with room to spare.
In the women’s event, Royal Fremantle’s Abbie Teasdale fired a superb 2-under-par 71 at St. Michael’s to secure her place in the final two rounds. Teasdale sits T29th at two over par for the championship and is WA’s lone representative in the competition after Celine Chen, Jorja Hinson-Tolchard, Sophie Williams, Amie Phobubpa and Mai Julius missed the cut.
