Royal Perth’s Fred Lee is the 2021 City of Perth Amateur Champion after defeating Lake Karrinyup’s Joseph Owen 2UP in the final matchplay round Sunday in some seriously challenging conditions.
Fred, 2016 WA Amateur Champion has been in the US studying at Stanford University, but certainly enjoyed a win back on his home turf at Royal Perth Golf Club.
There was some outstanding talent in the top sixteen that commenced the matchplay rounds on Sunday. Gosnells youngster Josiah Gilbert, qualified 16th but managed to take down top seed Cottesloe’s Michael Hanrahan Smith, followed by Tristan Geerlings, only to be defeated in the Semi’s by Fred. Joe Owen was strong through to the semi’s, defeating Jordan Jung to face Lee in the final match up.
The match was well fought in challenging weather conditions. Fred joins some prestigious names such as Terry Gale, Graham Marsh and Roger Mackay on the trophy which has been running since 1958.
