The Vines’ Adam Brady fired a day’s best round of 63 to force his way into the contention in the Nexus Advisernet WA Open at The Western Australian Golf Club.
The 20-year-old leads an impressive group of 10 amateurs through to the weekend, and will start the third round in the final group, six shots behind runaway leader Deyen Lawson. Lawson backed up a first round of 62 with another superb performance, posting a 7-under-par 63 that included three eagles.
Brady finished runner up to fellow Western Australian Conor McKinney in the St Andrews Links Trophy earlier this year and will look to take that experience into tomorrow’s third round.
“The St Andrews result gave me the confidence that I can compete and win,” he said. “Just being in that position, I know what emotions I’ll need to deal with this weekend. I’m sure my heart will be racing on the first tee, but that’s why I play and I’m really excited for it.”
Brady will play alongside Lawson and 2019 champion Michael Sim in the third round, and is hoping for plenty of home support as the leading Western Australian.
New South Wales’ Jeffrey Guan maintained his impressive form with a second successive round of 3-under-par 67 to make his intentions for the Terry Gale Cup, presented to the low amateur, clear. Guan finished in a tie for sixth in the 2021 event, played in April of this year, and last week he tied for ninth in the CKB WA PGA Championship.
Former champion Hayden Hopewell sits alongside British Amateur champion Aldrich Potgieter and South Australia’s Jack Buchanan in a tie for 18th on 4 under, with Alex Maxwell a shot further back.
No 1-ranked Joshua Greer and Connor Fawkes are in a tie for 31st at 2 under par, with Adam Hatch (-1) and Benjamin Sheehan (E) also making it through to the weekend rounds, with the cut coming at level par.
