Day two of the Mandurah Amateur presented a much more docile Mandurah Country Club. With the wind down and the sun out the conditions couldn’t have been better for scoring particularly for the afternoon wave.
The conditions were reflected in the scoring particularly on the women’s side of the competition. Local favorite Kathryn Norris backed up her solid day one with a three under 68 around her home track, leaving her with the 36-hole lead.
Two others joined Norris at the top of the scoring for day two. Queensland’s Rhianna Lewis and New South Wales June Song also posted low totals of 68. Song started the back nine with a bogey before an eagle and then a birdie to finish put her back at the to the top of the scoring for day two.
Only one other joined them in the sub 70 scoring and that was Victoria’s Molly Mclean. Mclean had three birdies on the bounce in the middle of her front nine to turn at three under.
The men also posted some low numbers with both Quinnton Croker and Connor McDade coming into the clubhouse with 67.
Croker dominated both sides of the course with a bogey, birdie and eagle on both nines. Croker eagled the short par four 7th and the par 5 18th.
Royal Melbourne’s Connor McDade’s round was equally as impressive. Mcdade was 2 under on both nines without a blemish on his card. Four birdies and fourteen pars made up the 18 holes.
McDade joins Norris as the two leaders after notching up back-to-back sub 70 rounds.
The field will be cut on both sides. 45 men will advance to the final 36 holes and Monday and the women will be cut down to 20.
Kathryn Norris will need to pull upon all of her local knowledge during the final 36 holes but will go into the final day with the lead and hard to beat.
George Barclay is the highest placed West Australian sitting in third. Will Barclay be able to chase down Mcdade or will McDade continue to put on a masterclass in Mandurah.
