The good news for West Australian golfing talent dominating abroad just keeps rolling in!
WA’s very own Josh Greer shot the low round of the day to rocket into a share of first place after the second qualifying round at the Scottish Men’s Amateur Championship at Murcar Links and Portlethen.
Greer carded an eight under par 64 to finish the 36-hole qualifier tied with Duff House Royal’s Callum Bruce and Portlethen’s Ben Murray on nine under par 134.
Greer, who made it through to the final qualifying round for the 2021 Open, is making the most of his European playing opportunities whilst abroad. He enjoyed an exciting time supporting great friend Min Woo Lee in his tremendous win of the 2021 Scottish Open.
Scottish Golf Media shared a brief interview with Josh following his outstanding round.
“I played very well today,” said Greer, who started his golfing career at Gourock Golf Club and made his debut for Scotland at the 2017 Boys’ Home Internationals at St Anne’s Old Links.
“My driving was good and so were my irons. I missed a few chances on the greens but overall my putter worked as well. The weather delay didn’t bother me. I just slept a bit longer than I would have done if we hadn’t had the bad weather.”
“I’m looking forward to the match play,” he added. “Murcar is a tougher course but I’m driving the ball well and that’s the key round there. You’ve got to keep in on the fairway.”
Greer is one of many talented youngsters rising through the Joondalup Golf Academy, joining fellow club-mates Tom Addy and Connor McKinney both currently competing abroad in the US and UK.
Joining Greer in his success, Tom Addy and Kirsten Rudgeley (fresh from her win of the 2021 Helen Holm Scottish Amateur) have both made it through to the matchplay rounds in the 2021 English Amateur. Addy shot an outstanding 69 in the second round of the English Men’s to make it through the to the match play competition at Moortown and Headingly courses in Yorkshire.
Kirsten continues to be in outstanding form, finishing well inside the cut in 20th position after the 36-holes of Stroke Play. Kirsten has the cool head and experience this type of competition, so a close eye on this young lady over the next two days will be essential golf viewing.
The leading 64 men and 32 women will progress to the match play stages of the championship English Amateur Championships. Players will be seeded according to their stroke play finishing place.
