This weekend the annual Aglime Sand Greens Championship will take place over Saturday and Sunday the 13th and 14th of August.
The event that started in 1981 will be held at Augusta Golf Club.
This will be the second time that Augusta has held the championship with the previous winner being Stephen Leaney of Royal Perth in 1992.
Augusta Golf club itself should offer plenty of difficulty as the fairways gentle undulate through the landscape down south.
The event offers a different challenge for some competitors who don’t usually putt on the slower sand surfaces.
The past winners list is impressive as well. Both Brady Watt and Ryan Peake have won the event and have gone on to become professionals since.
The 1996 winner, Ritchie Smith has gone on to have an illustrious coaching career. Coaching both Min Woo and Minjee lee. The later having won two Majors, including this year’s US Women’s Open.
The field will comprise of 192 players this week, all trying to get their hands on the prized trophy.
Five-time past winner Adam Davey will be in the field this weekend. Davey won last year’s Championship at Narrogin golf club.
Davey has won 4 other times at the Sand Greens Championship and is a massive inclusion in the field.
With such an impressive record in the Sand Greens Championship its hard to look past Davey as a favorite for this year’s Championship.
The field is littered with past winners, including recent winners.
Rodney Shemeld will tee it up this weekend as a past winner of the event. Shemeld won in 2018 at Jurien Bay and will no doubt be looking to get his name back in the winner’s circle.
Daniel Negus is another name to watch out for as he looks to add another Sand Green title next to his name.
Negus had the home court advantage in 2015 winning in Northam. Although no homecourt advantage this year he will be in as one of the favorites.
Another to win and win at their home club is Ryan Sheridan who won at Brookton in 2017. Sheridan will be playing in the same group as Daniel Negus on Saturday.
The Championship should be hotly contested, and fingers crossed the weather holds out for the weekend.
