Both Western Australia and Australia’s most promising juniors will take to The Vines Golf and Country Club next week in hope of winning The Drummond Golf Junior Amateur Championship of WA.
The long-held event has been going since 1914 for the boys and 1936 for the girls and attracts both interstate and international players.
Much like the Cobra Puma Championship the list of past winners isn’t short of big names. By Tuesday two of the young hopefuls will have etched their names next to some of the country’s best.
Hannah Green has won the event three times while Curtis Luck and Min Woo Lee have both won it twice.
The newly crowned Amateur Champion (British Amateur Champion) Aldrich Potgieter has also won The State Junior Amateur in 2020.
The Lakes course at The Vines gently undulates its way through the swan valley. Generous fairways give plenty of room however a preferred side of the fairway will give a significantly better view for the approach shot.
With plenty of risk and reward holes on both nines it should be an awesome setting to watch some of the top juniors battle it out.
Recently crowned Cobra Puma Champion Valerie Khuu will no doubt be looking to back up last week’s impressive performance with another strong finish.
She defeated Mount Lawley clubmate Amanda Gan on the first playoff hole last week. Gan will have some lingering frustration as she led after round one, she will be one to watch this week.
Celine Chen shouldn’t be forgotten and will take some momentum into the week. Her under par final round at the Cobra Puma should be a warning to her fellow competitors.
The boy’s side will also be hotly contested. After a second-place finish last week Braedon Law is in hot form and will certainly be trying to go one better this week.
The 8:56am group is brimming with talent. Three members of the boy’s Interstate team will tee it up in this group on Monday.
Josiah Edwards, Ollie Marsh, Riley Gott and George Barclay are the four that make up this group. All four will be raring to go. Both Edwards and Gott will be sure to use their length to take advantage and give shorter approaches into the tricky sloping greens.
The forecast looks like it will be two perfect Perth winters days out in the Swan Valley. The Public are welcome to come out and watch the juniors fight it out for the Drummond Golf Junior Amateur Championship. The first group is off at 8am Monday morning and its set up to be an awesome two days.
