A cold and blustery morning at Kwinana Golf Club greeted the 75 young hopefuls. The state’s best juniors braved the frosty conditions in search of the 2022 Cobra Puma title.
The course was in fantastic condition, primed and ready for the juniors to take on.
The greens proved a test throughout the morning. The fast-paced surfaces getting the better of most of the field at some point.
Errant approach shots left devilish up and downs, putting a premium on ball striking.
Isabella Leniartek couldn’t have started her campaign better. A hole in one on the 3rd and a birdie on the next got her to one under through five. As did most of the field bogeys through the round put her a couple back at the end of day one.
Aiyana Morris put her name in the ring for the Cobra Puma title with a 76. A solid start means Morris is two back and chasing going into day two.
The morning and the tricky conditions belonged to Amanda Gan. She Posted an impressive one over 74. Gan had a hard start bogeying two of the first four and finished her front nine over par.
It was a tale of two nines for Gan as she lit up the back nine. Birdies on 10 and 15 got her back to one over and two under on the back side.
Jorja Hinson-Tolchard fought hard and sits a few back going into day two. Don’t count her out as she challenges for second Cobra Puma title.
Joseph Buttress leads after round 1.
Joseph Buttress posted the best score for the day and continued his fine form. Starting on the back nine, a birdie and a bogey had him at level through nine.
Buttress although in cold conditions heated up on the back nine. He signed for a one under 71 and leads by one going into the second round. His ball striking stood out on gusty morning where the rest of the field was left scrambling.
Royal Fremantle’s Braedon Law was the next best posting a level par 72. Three birdies and three bogeys kept him in the race for the title.
Both George Barclay and Ollie Marsh posted scores that will keep them in the hunt tomorrow. A couple back of the leader they will have some ground to make up in early.
Day two is set up to have an awesome finish. With Rain predicted for day two it will be a matter of who can hold their nerve in the conditions.
The first groups will be off at 11am and the public are welcome to brave the conditions to see the states premier talent fight for the 2022 Cobra Puma title.
