A still, overcast April morning greeted the field for day one of this year’s Senior Amateur Championship of WA with a field of 57 men and 23 women, at Lakelands Country Club.
The course was well presented, even though the fairways were cored only a month ago, so the local rule of preferred lies was still in play. The greens were twice mowed rolling true, but players seemed to be leaving many putts short.
Tee times fell just before noon with players teeing off from both nines. A few names were missing due to Covid protocols including defending women’s champion Carmen Palframan (Lake Karrinyup).
Leading the men’s gross and net is Robert Teunissen (Geraldton Golf Club) with a fabulous one under par 71 to be net 67. Robert got off to a steady start from the back nine with a birdie on the par three 3rd hole and pars on the rest of the nine to get away with a one under par 35. His second nine wasn’t as consistent with two birdies and two bogies to finish with a second nine of 36.
Men’s favourite Ken Brewer’s (Newcastle Golf Club) first nine started off bumpy with four bogies and two birdies for a two over the card 38. However, he did stabilise on the back nine, with nine straight pars to finish with a two over par 74.
Australia’s top female senior amateur Sue Wooster (The National) leads the women with a first round of 80. Not one of her better rounds, it consisted of a double bogie and two bogies on her first nine for 41. She did manage a birdie on her eleventh hole but then had three more bogies to have 39. Leading the net for the women is Janice Gaudet (Joondalup) with an opening round of 81 to be a net 74.
