Many brollies were attached to buggies for the second round of qualifying golf at this year’s Amateur Championship of WA, hosted by Mount Lawley Golf Club.
The golf and the course heated up as the temperature by mid-day hit a warm 33 degrees. The greens had a faster roll compared to Thursday and the pin positions were very tight. This meant if you were going to make it to the match play rounds beginning on Friday you needed to be on your game.
The groups in the morning were able to enjoy the best playing conditions, unfortunately not many players capitalised on this. There were a number of young players out there enjoying their first taste of this tournament, with proud parents on the bag. One Dad said he was very proud of his boy getting his handicap down enough over the summer holidays to qualify therefore he deserved the two days off school. The future looks very bright for WA golf, these 14-year-old boys were competing with men twice their age and holding their own.
Kathryn Norris from Mandurah Country Club is the Women’s Medallist as leading qualifier with a three under the card 145. Katherine said she is very proud to be the Medallist, “I’ve worked really hard over the last few months, so it is nice to play some good golf and the results will show how hard I’ve worked”.
Sheridan Clancy produced the best round for the women today with a two under 72. Sheridan has only just come back from a busy schedule over east and said, “It takes a lot to adjust back from the Melbourne greens to the Perth greens as there is a lot of difference in grain and speed”.
Ryan Peake from Lakelands Country Club is the Men’s Medallist as leading qualifier with a two under the card 142. Ryan said he got off to a good start but nearly lost the game in the middle part but was able to relax and get some late birdies to end up square for the round. He was happy with his game and said he was looking forward to the match play: “if you play aggressive out there, it is really gettable, and you are going to need to make some birdies to win holes”.
Riley Gott from The Western Australian Golf Club produced the best round for the men today with a one under the card 71. Riley was happy that he was able to roll in some birdie putts and said that hitting the fairway placed him in a good position to attack the pins. Riley likes to hit a long ball off the tee, but he knows it needs to come with accuracy otherwise it is too easy to turn a birdie opportunity into a double bogey.
It is now game on for tomorrow as the match play rounds begin to determine the 2022 WA Amateur champions.
