A mild March morning with just a hint of rain greeted the field for day one of this year’s Amateur Championship of WA, at Mount Lawley Golf Club.
The course was well presented, with beautiful fairways and greens to match. The question was,where were those birdie putts going to fall.
The groups in the morning were able to enjoy the best playing conditions, unfortunately not many putts were falling. However, the bunkers where well used and proving hard for the players to get the ball close to the pin, delivering more bogies than pars. The wind came in at lunchtime and made for harder playing conditions and the scores certainly showed.
Kathryn Norris from Mandurah Country Club is leading the women with a three under the card 71. She said, “I was playing alright, but left a few out there”. Not a bad effort with five birdies for the day’s play, shame about the two bogies.
The men are looking very competitive with three players on two under the card with rounds of 70, George Barclay from Joondalup Country Club, Joseph Buttress from The Western Australian Golf Club and Ryan Peake from Lakelands Country Club. The bottom end of the 32 qualifiers looks like being decided with a playoff late Thursday afternoon.
George Barclay, fresh off his Nedlands Junior Masters win knows how important it is at Mount Lawley to get off the tee well saying, “You just have to make sure you’re on all day, just attacking pins.”
With sunny mild conditions forecast for tomorrow the reverse draw should see a chance for today’s afternoon players to catch up to the field and set the bar for qualifying for the match play rounds.
