Western Australia will take on the rest of the country for the first time since 2019 in the Australian Junior Interstate Series. Tonight’s announcement of the four boys and girls, that will take part in the Interstate Series at the Mount Osmond Golf Club in Adelaide between the 11th and 14th of April, is one that creates a lot of excitement for GolfWA Game Development and High Performance Manager, Marc Pike.
“It is fantastic to announce our Junior State Team after months of the hard work, dedication and competition by the initial 11 player boy and girl squads. It’s a great opportunity for them to test themselves against the best junior athletes in the country donning our black and gold. We can’t wait to see how they all perform, they’re all extremely talented and hungry to showcase themselves. I think this is a continuation of the outstanding players, coaches, golf facilities and resources we are blessed with here in Western Australia”, said Pike.
The Girls’ Team will include the following players;
Celine Chen (Joondalup Country Club)
Sheridan Clancy (Lake Karrinyup Country Club)
Jorja Hinson-Tolchard (Gosnells Golf Club)
Amie Phobubpa (Joondalup Country Club)
Phobubpa will also captain the team following a terrific 2021 which saw her become the Amateur Champion of Western Australia, whilst also joining the senior state squad. She is joined by Jorja Hinson-Tolchard, who took out the Cobra Puma Championship in a play-off last year at Cottesloe amongst horrid conditions. Sheridan Clancy tasted success multiple times in 2021 at GolfWA events, and recently became the first female junior to win a junior TPS event at the tournament in Murray River. Joondalup’s Celine Chen rounds out the team following her successful 2021 and strong pennant play for her club.
The Boys’ team will include the following players;
Joseph Buttress (Western Australian Golf Club)
Riley Gott (Western Australian Golf Club)
Ollie Marsh (Royal Fremantle Golf Club)
Alex Maxwell (Royal Fremantle Golf Club)
The form of Joe Buttress could not be ignored after he won both the Junior Amateur and Junior Masters in Tasmania earlier this year before becoming The Vines’ Open Champion in late February. He is joined by fellow WAGC member Riley Gott after he too had a successful 2021 and impressed during his pennants play in the recently completed GolfWA Junior Pennants. Ollie Marsh will also travel to Adelaide after impressing with his play despite only turning 14 earlier this year. Royal Fremantle’s Alex Maxwell is the final member of this year’s team, he also recently joined the ranks of GolfWA’s High Performance Program.
Along with the teams, two development athletes were named in Mount Lawley Golf Club’s Valerie Khuu and Josiah Edwards from Gosnells Golf Club. These two players, whilst not being active members of the State Team, will participate in the Australian Junior Amateur along with the members of the squad.
We wish coach Alex McKay, manager Catherine Strickland, and the entire team the best of luck in Adelaide.
