It wasn’t just the weather that heated up over the weekend, as GolfWA’s Junior Pennants approaches the pointy end of the season. All bar one division is currently tied at the top or being decided by one point as we head into the final rounds.
Starting with the Boys’ Division 1 which sees a strong Royal Fremantle lineup narrowly leading Gosnells, followed by Joondalup, WAGC, Mount Lawley and Royal Perth. Both of the top teams had a weekend to remember as Royal Fremantle took a convincing 5-0 win over Royal Perth and Gosnells beat Mount Lawley 4-1 despite playing at the former’s home club. This Sunday’s matchups at Joondalup Country Club will continue to define the division as the home club will be seeking to catch the top two with a win over leaders Royal Fremantle.
Lake Karrinyup continued its winning ways in the Boys’ Division 2, however they didn’t have it all their own way as they were challenged by a tough to beat South West team, the result ending with a 3-2 win to the division leaders. Mandurah Country Club secured their first taste of success as they triumphed 3-2 over Lakelands. It’s a tight tussle for the bottom four places here with Lakelands, Joondalup, Royal Fremantle and Mandurah all tied up with two points apiece.
Royal Fremantle continued to have a tight hold on top spot of Division 3 as they secured a tight 3-2 win over Lake Karrinyup. They will look to continue their win streak this weekend as they face a winless WAGC.
Division 4 continues to be the tightest division of the season with only one point separating the top three sides. Gosnells (4), The Vines and the South West are locked in a tough battle which is set to continue this weekend at Joondalup. The three top teams will go head to head with the three bottom sides in what looks to be another hot day on course for the Juniors.
Moving across to the girls and we see Mount Lawley Yang leading Division 1 in a tightly contested division. They halved their match with Joondalup last weekend at Royal Fremantle following a tie between Joondlaup’s Mia Lawson and Mount Lawley’s Isabella Leniartek. Joondalup and Mount Lawley Ying will look to take control of second spot in the division this weekend at Royal Perth as they face off.
The Girls’ Division 2 remains tight at the top and the only Junior Pennants Division with two unbeaten teams through three games. Royal Perth and Lakelands currently sit undefeated and will look to continue that run as they face the merged team of Lake Karrinyup/Cottesloe and Gosnells, respectively.
As we arrive to the Girls’ Division 3 we see the Soth West continue their strong golf over the course of this season with a 3-2 win over Royal Perth. The South West team have only dropped 4.5 matchups over the course of 3 weekends and will look to continue their form against bottom of the table Gosnells.
Another hot day looms for our Juniors on Sunday with a forecast of 33 degrees. Sun Blessed Sunscreen and water will be their best friends as they continue some of the best golf we have seen from this competition in years.
