The 2020 Cobra Puma Junior Championship kicked off the first week of the school holidays yesterday with ninety-five juniors eagerly re-entering competitive golf hosted by Wanneroo Golf Club.
Tough windy conditions challenged the youngsters, with last years champions Yeah-Jin Lee and Aldrich Potgieter both stumbling at the 5th hole with a quadruple and triple bogey respectively. Favourites Abbie Teasdale and Jordan Jung struggled on the front nine leaving a window for some strong new names at the top of the leaderboard.
Sixteen-year-old Tom Addy from Joondalup Country Club has a cool two-stroke lead after a confident even-par round. Tom showed great strength on distance, making birdie on three of the four Par 5’s at WGC. Joe Buttress and Trafford Wilcox hold second position with a narrow one-stroke lead over five strong contenders hot on their heels. Josh Hewton, Alex Maxwell, Jordan Jung, Ian Pienaar and Josiah Gilbert will be in a tight contest in the final round to secure the Boy’s Title.
Mount Lawley Golf Club 2019 Junior Open Champion, fourteen-year-old Erina Tan smashed her back nine to secure the lead in the 2020 Girl’s Competition recording an opening round a 74, giving her a two-stroke lead over Fremantle’s Celine Chen and Lake Karrinyup’s Sheridan Clancy. Yeah-Jin Lee and Abbie Teasdale are hot on their heels so it will be a telling final round in predicted windy and rainy conditions for all the Juniors at Wanneroo Golf Club.
Spectators are welcome to enjoy the Wanneroo Golf Club bar and restaurant tomorrow from 11.30 am and to support juniors participating in the 2020 Cobra Puma Junior Championships.
